International Summer Camp “Youth in Cold-War Europe and beyond” (15-24 August 2025, Weimar, Germany)

The Call for application for the International Summer Camp “Youth in Cold-War Europe and beyond” is opened! In August 2025 participants from all over Europe in the age 18-27 will get together in Weimar to explore the overlapping of political, social, and cultural history of Europe in the second half of the 20th century.
The International Summer Camp is going to addresses the question of how governments sought to shape young individuals during the second half of the 20th century through laws, institutions, and state-run initiatives. At the same time, the project explores how young people and youth groups responded to state power, examining their options, decisions, and the consequences of those decisions. These two perspectives are intertwined using methods of non-formal education, making the content accessible and engaging for participants aged 18 to 27.
The International Summer Camp aims to strengthen participants’ knowledge and competencies in the field of democracy education. It will explore the relationship between individual freedoms, social responsibility, and state authority, both from a historical and a contemporary perspective. Participants will reflect on the extent to which state authorities should influence individual behavior and decision-making.
The topic of youth in Cold War Europe will be examined through diverse visual materials. This includes discussions on visual (self-)representation, the construction of the “other,” and the ongoing presence of Cold War visual narratives in contemporary media.
